Launched in 1862 she was the largest ship in the world weighing 4 000 tonnes.

Scotia had a paddle wheel in conjunction with sails, was made of iron and held the Blue Riband on and off for nearly thirteen years. She eventually lost the record to Cunard's old rival the White Star Line in 1875, her best speed being in the region of 15.5 knots.
